  • Important Factors to consider when Buying an AED:

Intended User: When selecting an automated external defibrillator it's essential to opt for AEDs with clear instructions, including audio and visual aids, tailored to the users' training level. You'll also need to decide between automated (which delivers a shock automatically if needed) and a Semi-Automated AED (which requires the user to press a button to deliver the shock), though it can occasionally be more cost-effective. In most cases we recommend a fully automatic AED because it has a lower risk of error is crucial in high stress scenarios.

Maintenance and Self-testing: Select an AED that automatically conducts self-checks like the HeartStart HS1  to guarantee constant readiness, and consider the durability of its battery and electrode pads, as well as the simplicity of replacing them.

Portability: A portable AED should be lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry and store in various locations, such as homes, offices, or public spaces. Also the design should facilitate easy movement, possibly including features like handles or carrying cases.

Pediatric Capability: If the AED might be used on children or infants, ensure it has pediatric capabilities, either through special pads or a key switch.

Location of Use: The location where the AED will be used (public space, office, medical facility) can determine the type of device best suited for that environment. For example, medical facilities might require more advanced features, as they are likely to be used by trained healthcare professionals. This includes options for manual override, ECG display, and the ability to adjust energy levels for the shock.

Cost: The price ranges from around $1800 and $2700. It depends on the brand it, features, and technology included. Basic models are less expensive, while advanced models with more features, such as CPR feedback or wireless connectivity like the LIFEPAK CR2, are at the higher end of the price spectrum. Should also consider the ongoing costs of maintaining the AED, such as replacing batteries and electrode pads. The lifespan of these components varies; batteries might need replacement every 2-5 years, and pads typically every 2 years (or after each use). Ensure you account for these recurring costs in your budget.

  • Warranty

Check the warranty period and what it covers. Most manufacturers offer extended warranties or service plans for an additional cost, which might be worth considering for long-term reliability and support.
