The healthcare industry is expected to add a large number of jobs to the economy between 2014 and 2024. Employment in this sector has actually grown since the last recession, apparently unaffected by adverse economic situations.   The increase in healthcare jobs is largely driven by the aging adult population, increased healthcare spending, and the newly enacted Affordable Health Care Act. An increase in the demand for healthcare jobs and services over the next decade will result in an increased demand for qualified healthcare workers.   In order to meet these demands, healthcare employers will need to pace their branding efforts, to help construct and maintain a pipeline of candidates. Employers will need to apply targeted marketing strategies that will resonate with the modern generation of healthcare workers, and at the same time ensuring the retention of experienced workers.   Care of Aging Adults   Healthcare jobs will continue to dominate the list of the fastest growing professions. Among the 20 fastest growing occupations between 2014 and 2024, 11 of them are health-related.   Personal care aide is projected to be the fastest-growing healthcare occupation, increasing by 53 percent, followed by home health aide, increasing by 48 percent and diagnostic medical sonographers, increasing by 46 percent.   The job growth in these professions is a result of a growing aging adult population, less costly home care compared to institutional care and discharged patients’ need for continued healthcare.   Health Care Employees.png   According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is one of the largest industries in the country, with nearly 22 million jobs projected for the year 2024. This is an increase of nearly 5 million jobs from 2014 to 2024.   Employment in the healthcare industry is projected to increase 29 percent through 2024, compared to an average of 11 percent for all industries. The healthcare industry group is projected to be the fastest-growing industry overall from 2014 to 2024.   Some health care industries have grown faster than the others and are expected to do so. Offices of healthcare practitioners are expected to be the fastest and largest sources of future employment growth. Employment in offices of healthcare practitioners is projected to increase by almost 1.4 million.   Medical Careers   Overall, healthcare support occupations are expected to grow by about 28 percent (or about 1.1 million jobs) from 2014 to 2024. Healthcare support occupations are projected to grow more than any other service occupations. In terms of numbers, registered nurses are the largest healthcare occupation, with 2.7 million workers in 2014.   Healthcare support occupations and healthcare practitioners are projected to be the fastest growing occupational groups during the 2014 to 2024 projections decade. These groups are projected to contribute the newest jobs, with a combined increase of 2.3 million in employment, representing about 1 in 4 new jobs.   Personal care aides are expected to gain the largest number of jobs, about 581,000, by 2022. Registered nurses are expected to have the most job openings in all healthcare occupations over the 2014-24 decade.   Australian Bureau of Stats.png   According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, openings occur when jobs are added to the economy, as well as when workers leave a current occupation permanently.   This certainly gives good reason for people to pursue a career in the field of healthcare.
