Nursing school is one of the most difficult but rewarding things you might ever do. There is so much to learn in such a seemingly small amount of time. As a profession nursing demands exceptional organisational skills so the more you can develop these skills now, the better. Here are some tips and strategies we have put together to help you get organised and prepared for the journey ahead.
1. Plan Your Schedule
2. Prepare Your Work Space
3. Study/Life Balance
4.Tools of the Trade
plan your schedule
One of the best ways to stay ahead and avoid being overwhelmed is to get on top of your schedule. There are basically two ways to go about this; the old school tried and true paper and pen method, or if you love all things digital there are many great tech based options available! Even better, you can use a combination of both! It is all about finding what works best for you.

Old School?

Find a quality day planner from your local newsagent or office supplies store and put your pens to good use.

Tech Savvy?

Most computers these days come with build in daily planning software and calendar systems. Alternatively you can find a number of free or low cost options online or by using the app store on your phone or tablet. One of the best things about using a digital planning system is that you can set alerts and reminders to keep yourself on track.

Schedule What?

Once you find your ideal calendar and day planner schedule everything: classes, assignment due dates, assessment times, placements, study time, and even leisure time. This way you will be sure to know what you need to be doing and when you need to be doing it.
Prepare your work space
Having a tidy and organised work area with all the necessary study equipment will maximise your efficiency and reduce stress levels. Nursing school is stressful enough without not being able to find something you need like a text book that you end up finding under the couch…

Go Shopping

Need we say any more? Ensure you have all required text books along with an ample supply of writing paper, note-books, sticky notes, stationary, pencil cases, folders, highlighters and pens, you can never have too many pens.

Design Your Space

Try to make your work space as comfortable and uncluttered as possible since you will be spending a lot of time there. Developing a system for where everything gets stored is a great idea as it will save time.
Remember: “A place for everything and everything in its place” is a nurses mantra.

Be Your Own Assistant

Develop a filing system for hard copy documents and computer based documents. Learn how to create folders on your computer and use them to organise your materials so they are easy to locate when required. Invest in a sturdy USB drive and get into the habit of backing up your work regularly. Many tears can be avoided by getting into the habit of backing up your work frequently.
Studying nursing can be very demanding and in order to avoid burn out it is important to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Like getting organised, and having a place for everything, this is one of those skills that you will need to carry with you out into the work force.

Set Boundaries

Designate time for study as well as time for leisure activities and socialising. By setting yourself clear boundaries you can achieve a healthy balance. It is very important to look after your body and mind during the intensity of nursing school.

Reward Yourself!

If you are prone to procrastination work on using a delayed gratification technique by scheduling your study first and play later, this way your leisure time will come as a reward for your positive study efforts. This behaviour actually forms a positive reinforcement cycle which will lead to a positive study routine.

Stay Healthy

Make time for yourself to exercise, catch up with friends and family, and do things that make you happy. By taking time to enjoy yourself you will boost your mood and this in turn will enhance your productivity and studying abilities, it is a win win situation really! Fueling your body with good quality nutrition will also help to give you the energy you need to make it through the challenging times. Even though we understand that sometimes you may feel a bit like this...
As a nursing student working your way towards becoming a professional nurse there are some essential tools that you cannot live without! Here is a list of some of the nursing essentials that Medshop Australia supplies:

Which Stethoscope?

One of our most frequently asked question from nursing students is which stethoscope should I buy? What we recommend for nursing students is to invest in a quality stethoscope that will stand the test of time. The industry standard for nurses is the Littmann Classic stethoscope range. Some of our customers have had their Littmann stethoscopes for decades, since they were in nursing school themselves! So although they may be a bit more expensive initially, if you want a quality stethoscope that will last for longer and pick up a wide range of frequencies - we cannot recommend the Littmann Classic range highly enough.

Not Sure Where to Start?

To take the hassle out of finding all the things you need for your nursing kit Medshop Australia has put together nursing kits and packages for you! They are available in a range of vibrant colours and as a bonus it is also cheaper to buy your nursing essentials as part of a kit so what are you waiting for? Head over to Medshop Australia and check out our nursing kit range. Please note: only the Littmann Advanced Nursing Packages and the ACU Student Packs come with Littmann Classic stethoscopes.
