Medshop Student Scholarship Program - 2017 Winner and Runner up Announcement

Medshop Student Scholarship Program

2017 marks the first ever year for the Medshop Australia Student Scholarship Program. The scholarship program has been such a great success that we plan to continue on the tradition next year. This is great news for anyone who missed out on submitting an application for this years competition.

The scholarship application rules were simple. We asked applicants to write an essay of 1,000 words or less explaining why they had entered into their chosen medical or healthcare field, but there was something else too...

Applicants also had to like or follow one of our social media pages (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest or Google+) and share the details of the scholarship on Facebook or Twitter with #medshopstudentscholarship2017.

You wouldn’t believe the number of great stories we read by contestants who didn’t follow all of the instructions that we had clearly explained on our scholarship web page.

It’s hard to say if these missteps would have affected our choices for winner and runner up though.  Both the winner and runner up wrote outstanding essays. You'll get a peek in a second, promise.

Although we had many solid entries, we could only pick two winners, which wasn’t an easy task at all.

After much debating amongst the Medshop team, a few speeches, and one hard fought thumb-wrestling match, we finally agreed on the winners.

So, who won?

Our runner up winner, Vi Tran is studying speech pathology. About her enthusiasm for becoming a speech pathologist she wrote:

"... there is nothing more rewarding than being able to support and help a person gain, or regain the ability to do the “simplest” tasks in life, and have it improve almost all aspects of their life. Including their independence, relationships they have with others, employment, education, hobbies and passions."
This excerpt was taken from Vi Tran's essay which won her $1,500 just for telling us about her passion for speech pathology. After reading Vi Tran's entry, some of us started wondering if we followed the wrong career path. Then we read the winning entry, and we were even more blown away.

The first place winner is studying to be a paediatrician. Of her interest in the field of paediatric medicine, she had this to say:

"A child’s doctor is a key part of giving them the best childhood possible. Whether it’s treating an acute illness or working long-term to manage a chronic illness, proper medical care is vital. But it’s not just about medical care - childhood illness can affect all aspects of a child’s life and their family. A paediatrician can also provide vital emotional support, give lifestyle advice, and provide referrals to allied health services. I want to work together with families to find the best solutions for improving their child’s wellbeing."

Did that give anybody else chills? Wow! Please join us in giving huge round of applause and sincere thank you to our winner.

Congratulations to Rebekah Clark for winning the first place prize of $3,500.00!

With her winning scholarship funds, Rebekah plans to visit an overseas paediatric hospital as part of her final year elective. We are proud to have been able to assist Rebekah on her journey towards achieving her dreams and making a difference in the world.

If you’re reading this now and  wondering why you didn’t win, don’t despair. There’s a good chance we’ll be running more great promotions and offers in the near future. Stay tuned for the next Medshop Australia Student Scholarship Program in 2018.

Who knows, it might be your turn next and we can’t wait to celebrate with you.

We would like to say a big thank you to all of our scholarship applicants. Medshop Australia is committed to supporting our medical and healthcare students in as many ways as we can. You are the medical and healthcare professionals of the future and we appreciate every one of you for your positive contribution.
